Rubber or EPDM flat Roofing

Rubber roofing (also called EPDM) is a popular type of single ply membrane roofing. Simply put single ply membrane roofing consists of one layer or membrane (EPDM in this case) which is overlaid on the insulting roofing layer which in turn is placed over a vapour control layer on top of the deck. Single ply roofing systems are becoming very popular because they’re quickly installed, very cost effective and weatherproof making them ideal solutions for domestic and commercial roofing.
Rubber roofs are very durable and long lasting. They come with a 20 year warranty and a life expectancy of over 25 years. EPDM comes in a variety of grades, the higher the grade the better quality the material and the more resistant to damage. It’s glued directly to the roof structure and joints are glued together making this type of roof very waterproof when it’s in good condition. It comes in a small range of colours, grey shades being the most popular, and so its also the cheapest type of single ply membrane.
There is the risk of contamination of the adhesive used to bond joints with EPDM roofs. If they become contaminated with dust or water it can reduce their effectiveness and can lead to roof failure, which is why it’s important to use an experienced flat roofing specialist. EPDM can also stiffen over time which may make repairs more difficult.
This material cannot be recycled. It can however be reused if it’s laid loose and mechanically fixed to the underlying roof structure. If you’d like to find out about using recycled EPDM for your roof or would like to find out about the most eco-friendly options available for you just contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
